It is quite ridiculous, how bad the the US health care system is. I know that Obama is up for a huge fight, but the status quo HAS to change. People CANNOT be denied basic care because they cannot afford health insurance. I do believe that the business of health insurance in the US is the biggest crock of shit in the world. Yes, ERs are under the Hippocratic Oath to take care of anybody and everybody without attention to race, creed, etc. However, that does not mean that I won't have to pay a bazillion dollars for the visit. I just don't go. Even when I really probably need to. I do not go until I am so utterly destitute that I know that there is absolutely NO other choice.

These lucky bastards that can go to the doctor on a whim don't know what it's like to really be on the bottom. Yes, there are issues with Universal Health Care, but at least people are getting basic, preventative health care and suffering less for it. I've heard nary a complaint from people who actually LIVE in places where UHC is available. I am insanely lucky to have the mental health care that I do have. I honestly probably would have offed myself long ago, were it not for the assistance that I do receive from the state. I have once-weekly therapy appointments, appointments with my doctor every three months, and my meds are taken care of. I am by now means a "leech" off of the state. I just simply need the mental health care, and I have no other choice. I'm working on getting on some state health insurance to cover the basics, but it's a process. ::rolls eyes:: It's always a process, and 40 bazillion hoops to dive through. "We can't let those darn freeloaders leech off of "the System"".

My husband is from England and he just can't believe how bad it is. There are some problems in his country but none of them involve people not getting treatment, or getting bankrupted by getting treatment. It is finally getting talked about by U.S. politicians being taken seriously, thank goodness. Obama is still going to have an uphill battle getting through to congress, but I think he's going to make at least some movement toward universal health care.
